Princes and kings from all over Europe came here starting in the early 1900s, at the time of the Belle Époque and Art Nouveau styles. Even today it is the most elegant and exclusive town on Lake Garda. Because of the beauty of its villages and green spaces, it is called the "garden city." Here the famous poet Gabriele D'Annunzio built his splendid mansion-museum: the Vittoriale degli Italiani.
A city built in the time of the ancient Romans, it is a corner of paradise that stretches out in the middle of the lake. The Latin poet Catullus lived here. Perhaps he composed his love poem "Odi et amo" here. The remains of the large Roman villa in which he stayed are still clearly visible and can be visited. There is also an archaeological museum of Roman antiquities full of valuable artifacts. In the Middle Ages Sirmione became a village fortified by high crenellated walls. Today it is a nice place to visit for shopping or lunch in one of its quaint restaurants. Very beautiful is the castle with the harbor built within the walls.
